SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Southern Maine Community College announced Monday that it has hired award-winning journalist Clarke Canfield as its Director of Communications.

In his role, Canfield will manage the school’s internal and external communications and serve as the college spokesman.

Canfield has more than 30 years experience as a writer and editor at daily newspapers, magazines and Internet sites. He comes to SMCC from The Associated Press, where he worked for more than 12 years. He previously worked for the Portland Press Herald and has won numerous state, regional and national journalism awards.

As a professional communicator to diverse audiences, Canfield’s interaction with media and community groups will greatly benefit the college, said SMCC President Ronald G. Cantor.

“We welcome Clarke’s experience in helping us relay our messages, mission and continuous work towards excellence,” Cantor said.

Canfield said he’s excited to be a part of Maine’s largest community college.

“It’s an honor to be part of this growing and vibrant institution, right here in my own backyard,” Canfield said. “I look forward to an active role in telling SMCC’s many stories.”

Canfield lives in South Portland with his wife and teenage son.
