There is a growing group of people which includes gun owners that believe sensible, responsible action must be taken to regulate the prevalence of guns in our country. We can begin that by raising our hands and saying count me in. This matters. It matters here in Northern Maine.
It is significant that mayors from Augusta and Hallowell have joined Mayors Against Illegal Gun in their call for sensible gun control measures and Karen Heck mayor of Waterville has joined Maine Citizens Against Handgun Violence to call for action on this issue.
It is important to know that Maine’s constitution states that: “All people are born equally free and independent, and have certain natural, inherent and unalienable rights, among which are those of enjoying and defending life and liberty, acquiring, possessing and protecting property, and of pursuing and obtaining safety and happiness.” And: “Every citizen has a right to keep and bear arms and this right shall never be questioned.” That right cannot be denied those who wish to exercise it. But that right does not mean there cannot be sensible regulation to insure the rights of others regarding “enjoying life and liberty” and “pursuing and obtaining safety.”
Because Maine is #25 on the list of states that export gun crime (http://www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org/downloads/pdf/trace_the_guns_report.pdf) the national discussion is impacted by what we do here. Maine has always been a leader when sensible change is the obvious solution to an issue. What those solutions are need to be decided by the people of Maine.
To begin a discussion about the issues and to organize efforts to affect decisions you are invited to attend the first meeting of the Silent No More Action Group, June 20, at 6:00, Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine, 96 Harlow Street, Bangor. For more information or to RSVP or to simply be counted please contact Mary at SNMAG@outlook.com.
In addition if you are interested in registering your organizations’ support for action on this issue you are encouraged you to consider joining The Coalition for a Safer Maine, http://www.coalitionsafermaine.org/coalition-members/
