BANGOR, Maine – Alexandra Scott of Garland, Maine, received the Student of the Year award on May 11 during the commencement exercise of the New England School of Communications. Student of the Year is given to the student receiving the highest grade point average. Scott graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications.

As a sophomore in the marketing communications program, as part a group, she participated in a six-week challenge sponsored by Honda executives. With a $150 to use social media, a flip camera and a Honda CR-Z, the company was looking for innovative ways to attract 18 to 35 year olds to purchase the new Honda CR-Z. The advertising campaign the group devised centered around a character named “CR Zazzy” who becomes infatuated with the car. The group won second place in the national competition.

“We really didn’t know it would go as far as it did. Getting to be a part of it was really cool,” said Scott, who also found time outside of her course load and the CR Zazzy campaign to be a student ambassador.

“You give campus tours. Attend open houses to meet with prospective students and let them know about the marketing concentration and talk with parents about their concerns and questions about campus life,” explained Scott.

Scott also did a local internship. “I interned at Eastern Maine Area Agency on Aging. I was in charge of moving everything from their old website to their newweb site. They had me do a lot of design work and create brochures,” explained Scott. “When I completed my internship there, Carol Higgins Taylor, EAAA’s director of communications kept me. She hired me on for a few hours a week helping her.”

Scott said she pushed herself to excel in school and the opportunities she was able to experience along the way is something she will miss.
