PORTLAND, Maine — Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine (SARSSM) will celebrate its 40th Anniversary at the Chocolate Lovers’ Fling 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, April 7,  at Holiday Inn by the Bay. As always, the benefit will feature the decadent confections of Southern Maine’s most talented chocolatiers.

To celebrate SARSSM’s anniversary, this year’s Chocolate Lovers’ Fling will be a special gala event, featuring table service, multiple courses of chocolate tasting, a silent auction, and a celebration of SARSSM’s history. All seating is reserved. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased in advance at www.chocolateloversfling.org.

Now in its 27th year, the Chocolate Lovers’ Fling has a loyal following of chocolate enthusiasts who make an annual pilgrimage on the first Sunday of April. 15 talented local chocolatiers will showcase their creativity and serve their ultimate chocolate confection. Chocolatiers compete for awards, including the prized People’s Choice award. All attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the judging process, and will receive expert guidance in chocolate appreciation. Attendees can also look forward to meeting the chocolatiers and placing bids in a silent auction featuring jewelry, art, getaways, and of course, chocolate.

The Chocolate Lovers’ Fling is a fun way to support SARSSM and a good excuse to indulge in an afternoon of delicious chocolate desserts. It also generates funds essential to keeping SARSSM’s free and confidential services available. Last year Holly, who had attended six Chocolate Lovers’ Flings, said, “It’s great to see so many people support such a great cause. I almost teared up seeing everybody here today because it’s such a great cause – to know that that many people support [SARSSM] and they can help more people like me – it’s great, it’s heartfelt.”

Since 1973, Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine has been providing free and confidential services to survivors of sexual violence and those that support them. Serving York and Cumberland Counties, SARSSM works to minimize emotional and physical trauma, to restore safety and a sense of well-being, and to assist with the legal process. SARSSM offers a 24-hour crisis and support line, a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), and support groups. SARSSM works from the perspective that sexual violence is a result of attitudes and beliefs that can change, thereby reducing the rates of sexual violence. School-based education, community education and community awareness projects work to improve the social climate and prevent violence. Visit www.sarsonline.org for more information.
