Bangor Maine—A traditional dinner of turkey, stuffing, and all the fixings, along with plenty of pies, will greet guests to The Salvation Army Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen’s Thanksgiving meal, to be held at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, November 20, at 65 S. Park Street in Bangor.
“This is an opportunity for those who regularly come to our soup kitchen, as well as anyone else who would like to join us, to enjoy the food and fellowship that are so much a part of Thanksgiving,” said Thea Day, Director of Social Services for the Bangor Salvation Army.
The meal will be prepared by volunteers from over 15 groups representing a spectrum of the Greater Bangor community, including church, civic and community organizations, making it truly a community effort.
Last year, more than 200 meals were served, and it is expected that even more will join the feast this year. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
To accommodate the numbers who will attend, Salvation Army staff and volunteers have decorated the gymnasium and set up plenty of chairs and tables in an effort to lend a family feel to the dinner.
“For many who don’t have family nearby, or who can’t afford to prepare a meal of their own, this is an opportunity to share a traditional dinner with others,” said Captain Tim Clark, Corps Officer of the Bangor Salvation Army. “Each year, those who join us express their gratitude for such a hearty feast lovingly prepared by our volunteers. For each of us, it is a reminder of the many things for which we can be thankful.”
Year round, The Salvation Army’s Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen serves lunch Monday to Friday, and breakfast on Sundays, with an average of 100 meals per day.
