Quality of Life Classes

Pet Grooming – Thursday, April 25 from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m.  Learn the basics of every-day dog grooming with Betsy Newman.  A minimum of 10 students is needed to run this class. The cost is $15.

Solar Energy – Saturday, April 27 from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.  Back by popular demand … Lee Zwicker offers a handyman’s guide to lower your energy footprint and save you money on both your heating and electrical bills. This course is designed for middle and low income home owners who want to save money and help save the planet at the same time. We will cover the construction or purchase of both homemade and commercial solar panels, battery banks, solar hot water heaters, solar hot air systems, solar ovens and solar distillation units. So, if you are interested in saving several hundreds of dollars a year by learning how to build a 30-gallon solar batch hot water heater out of recycled parts for under $100, or maybe a solar heated water trough for cattle that won’t freeze this winter, this is the course for you! (A minimum of 8 students is required.)  Cost:  $42

Driving Dynamics – Saturday, April 27 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.  Maine Driving Dynamics is a Maine sponsored 5-hour defensive driving course that offers all drivers the opportunity to improve their defensive driving abilities. Course includes discussion of collision avoidance techniques, safety issues, driver habits and attitudes, and the basic elements that constantly challenge drivers on Maine’s highways. It is taught by a certified instructor in a format that engages students with lectures, videos, and class discussion/participation. Those completing the course will receive a 3-point credit on their driving record and students 55 and older can receive an insurance discount from their insurer. Best of all, we believe students will be safer drivers and leave the class with a new and unique way of looking at the driving experience.  Cost:  $40, Senior Citizen (65 and older):  $10

Raised Bed Garden Series – Learn everything you need to know about growing your own raised bed garden from start to finish.  Classes will be taught by Kate Garland, Horticulturist with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, and will be held 4 – 5:30 pm on Wednesdays at Nokomis Regional High School.
