Rotary Roundup: Networking Events And District Governor’s Visit Encourage Community Projects

Posted Oct. 16, 2012, at 11:49 a.m.

The Bar Harbor/MDI Rotary has been experimenting the last two months with monthly Rotary After Hours (evening socials) in place of the typical lunch meeting. Happening the first Wednesday night of every month, the idea is to meet in different venues and from 5-7 pm allow for a short meeting and plenty of networking. The first two socials were held at the Blue Hose Inn (thanks to Jim Ash and his staff for the wonderful hospitality). Next month’s monthly social will be at Gayln’s on November 7 from 5-7 pm. Socials like this are a great way for potential members to learn more about Rotary and meet Rotary members. For more information about membership opportunities, please contact President Elect Marc Perry at marc@barharbormaine.gov.

On September 12, the District Governor Serge Poulin from Quebec visited and spoke at the weekly noon meeting about plans Rotary has for the upcoming year. Projects include a mission to India that will be performing 1500 cataract surgeries to people in need. A local project hopes to train 100 people in both Quebec and Maine the skills required to prevent suicide. Accompanied by Associate District Governor Linclon Ehrlenbach of the Ellsworth Rotary club, a welcome reception was held at Seal Cove Auto Museum later that night.

Rotarians will be participating in the Business of Reading, a program at Conners Emerson school taking place October 22-26 which allows business people from the community to read in classrooms and share how reading has contributed to their careers.
