Reps. Gideon and Dorney to receive Harm Reduction Hero awards

AUGUSTA, Maine — Representatives Sara Gideon and Ann Dorney will be presented Harm Reduction Hero awards at the second annual Maine Harm Reduction Conference.

The Maine Harm Reduction Conference is an opportunity for medical, social service, and public health providers as well as advocates and community members to connect and learn about Harm Reduction approaches to addiction.

This year’s annual Harm Reduction Hero Award are expected to be presented to Rep. Gideon of Freeport and Rep. Dorney of Norridgewock in recognition of their contributions to the health and well-being of people who have addiction issues, and efforts to further the field of harm reduction in Maine.

The awards are made in honor of both legislators efforts to advance legislation that would make naloxone, a narcotics overdose antidote, more available to persons at risk, as well as other pieces of legislation intended to curb overdose deaths.

Attending besides Gideon and Dorney will be Kenny Miller, executive director of Down East AIDS Network, co-founder of Maine Harm Reduction Alliance; Jayne Harper, program coordinator, MaineGeneral Harm Reduction.

The presentations will be made at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Kaplan University, 14 Marketplace Drive in Augusta.
