BREWER, Maine — The Bangor Area Recovery Network launched its campaign to “Raise the BARN Roof” on April 30, at its community recovery center located at 142 Center St. in Brewer.

“Repairing the roof is an urgent priority for the BARN, and we need to raise $50,000 to replace it by next winter. To do that, we are reaching out to the community” explained Sheri Quatrale of Key Bank, BARN Board member and chair of the campaign, in a press release.

With its mission “to provide a sustainable and reliable community recovery center that supports the needs of people affected by addiction,” BARN purchased and renovated a former furniture store in Brewer to serve as its permanent location for its recovery center and opened its doors at the facility in 2012.

Initial renovations at the BARN required new bathrooms, furnace, offices, and program space to obtain its certificate of occupancy, but it was unable to replace the roof at that time.

“The BARN is an incredible asset to the greater Bangor/Brewer area. Substance abuse destroys individuals and families and costs Penobscot County millions of dollars every year. Our community needs the BARN, and replacing our roof by next winter is one of our top priorities. It is our shared investment in supporting recovery in our community,” said Quatrale in a prepared statement.

Volunteer Coordinator Fonda Smith manages a core team of 15 volunteers that enables the facility to be open and available seven days per week, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. BARN hosts dozens of weekly recovery support activities that include 12-Step meetings, education, parenting, and other recovery support services, plus weekly dances and other social activities and events for the recovery community.

In keeping with its slogan of “making recovery visible in the community” BARN is active in education and recovery advocacy and accrues over 900 volunteer hours every month through its grassroots efforts.
