CAMDEN, Maine — The scent of pineapples and the twang of ukuleles will fill the air at Quarry Hill as residents and staff members of the older-adult community celebrate National Nursing Home Week, May 11 through 17. The annual observance, sponsored by the American Healthcare Association, honors nursing home residents as well as the family members, employees, and volunteers who enrich their lives.
In keeping with the “Living the Aloha Spirit” theme established for the 2014 celebration, festivities at Quarry Hill will include an Hawaiian shirt day and a Hawaiian lunch, followed by quesadillas, smoothies, and other treats throughout the week.
Friends and family of residents of the Gardens nursing-care center at Quarry Hill are invited to attend a performance by Belfast musician Frets Halligan on the ukulele on Thursday, May 15, at 3 pm, and by hula dancers on Friday, May 16, at 2 pm. Both events will take place in the Gardens; admission will be free.
The week’s events are designed to demonstrate the “aloha spirit,” which to Hawaiians extends beyond greetings to embrace qualities of “patience, kindness and good feelings and respect in caring about others,” according to the association’s website.
“By living the Aloha Spirit, we show others love and respect and joyfully share life in order to create a better world,” reads the website.
