MACHIAS, Maine — Planning for the 2nd Annual Machias Harvest Fair and Wine and Beer Tasting Festival is under way, with several new and exciting offerings this year. The day of fun is sponsored by the Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce.
Shooting pumpkins into Machias Bay from homemade catapults and trebuchets was a most popular activity last fall and will return this year. “We had 10 teams participate in shooting pumpkins last year and it was so much fun, both for the teams and the spectactors,” MBACC Director Sharon Mack said. “Already those teams that built catapults last year are signing up again for this year’s competition.”
New to the event will be a color dash, craft beer tasting, and a special children’s area, and all activities will be held in the area around Station 1898, the town’s vintage railroad station, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27.
The Wine and Beer Tasting Festival will be held in the Lee Pellon Center from noon to five and is jointly sponsored by Pat’s Pizza, The French Cellar and the Machias Bay Chamber of Commerce. At least 30 different wines and 25 different beers will be available for tasting. Admission is $15 for just wine or beer and $20 for both. Admission includes an inscribed glass and refreshments. Music will also be provided at the event. The Machias Rotary Club has volunteered to be “pourers” at the tasting.
Twenty vendors have already signed up to sell items ranging from handmade jewelry to artisanal crafts in the area around Station 1898. Each space is just $20 and farmers that will be selling their harvest are given free spaces. Call the Chamber at 255.4402 to register.
Those wishing to participate in the pumpkin chucking should create a contraption that is able to shoot a three to five pound pumpkin. The winner will be based on distance. No motorized or pressurized devices are allowed. There is no fee to register but please call the Chamber to sign up. Pumpkin chucking will begin at 11 a.m.
Washington County: One Community is hosting a companion event, a Color Dash, which is a fun run from the University of Maine at Machias to Station 1898. Runners and walkers are sprinkled with powdered colors as they participate. Registration forms are available at the Chamber office, 11 Main Street, Machias.
The Chamber is seeking volunteers to work in the children’s area and to assist in judging the pumpkin chucking. Church and youth groups would be especially welcome. For more information, contact Sharon or Susan at the Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, 255.4402.
