PORTLAND, Maine — Perkins Olson, PA, a Portland firm that specializes in business law, has announced its acquisition of Bohan Mathers & Associates, regarded as one of the leading intellectual property law firms in northern New England. Each practice will continue to serve its own clientele under its current name, while maintaining its personnel, unique characteristics and specialized services.
Speaking of the new affiliation, Perkins Olson President Dave Perkins noted, “We have enjoyed a business relationship with Bohan Mathers over several years, working together with entrepreneurs to protect their intellectual property. We are now in a better position to serve clients needing IP work, combined with a broad range of corporate and business law services. By integrating, our broad based business practice will now have a keen focus on technology and intellectual property based businesses.” Bohan Mathers principal, Patricia Mathers, added, “We complement each other professionally. It strengthens us by providing diversified practices, collective resources and experience, and offers cost effective solutions to our clients.”
Dave Perkins is the manager and initial member of Bohan Mathers & Associates. Jeff Joyce, a former software engineer and now a lawyer with Perkins Olson, will work in tandem with Patricia Mathers to lead the intellectual property practice at Bohan Mathers. Perkins notes: “There are no changes in the Bohan Mathers personnel or services. We are retaining the leadership and expertise they bring to intellectual property matters.” He adds, “This strategic relationship will expand our specialized services and our ability to help Maine entrepreneurs flourish in the information based economy. Perkins Olson will continue its focus on the many legal needs of small and medium sized companies, and Bohan Mathers will continue to build on 30 years of IP, patent, and trademark law experience. Because we are each specialized in our field of legal services, and each has developed a strong reputation and client base, we respectfully opted to maintain the unique names.”
David Perkins, after working in the Maine Attorney General’s Office and Pierce Atwood, opened his firm in 1993 with his father, Don. The firm’s emphasis is on business law including buying /selling businesses, general corporate law, construction, litigating business and land use disputes, financing, commercial real estate, bankruptcy and workouts. Richard Olson joined Perkins Olson in 1995 and became a shareholder, and the practice was renamed, Perkins Olson. Since that time the firm has worked with clients to form over 750 new businesses. Perkins Olson is also the home of Maine Coast Title, serving the Maine commercial and residential real estate market.
Thomas Bohan opened the intellectual property firm, Thomas Bohan & Associates, in 1982. Patricia Mathers took over the practice in 2002, renaming the company Bohan Mathers & Associates. Patricia brings a strong background in engineering and technical expertise to the firm’s patent work. She is fluent in German, which accounts for the firm’s substantial German client base. In the past 25 years, Bohan Mathers has obtained over 250 patents for clients, worldwide.
