PROSPECT and VERONA, Maine —  The Penobscot Narrows Bridge, which carries Route 1 over the Penobscot River, will undergo an inspection and bridge survey beginning on Thursday, Dec. 5, that will result in intermittent road closures and lane shifts during the daytime and overnight hours, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.

While conducting the bridge survey, intermittent road closures of up to 45 minutes will occur from 10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, until 4 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6. There will be alternating two-way traffic between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Thursday, Dec 5, to Tuesday, Dec. 10.

Motorists should allow extra time when planning on traveling this bridge during these hours.

The inspection will include gaining access to the bottom of the concrete structure, the supporting cables and the supporting pylons.

The survey will be performed to ensure the bridge is maintaining its desired design geometry.
