Passamaquoddy Storytelling and Shadow Puppet Workshop

Workshop: Monday & Tuesday, July 7 & 8, 1-4pm

Public Performance: Tuesday, July 8th, 5pm

Children ages 8-12 are invited by the Eastport Arts Center to attend a two ­day Passamaquoddy storytelling and shadow puppet workshop on Monday and Tuesday, July 7 and 8 from 1­-4 p.m. In this free workshop, children will be able to interpret Passamaquoddy stories with shadow puppets that they create. Intergenerational collaboration is highly encouraged, and parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles/guardians are most welcome to attend. A public performance will be presented at 5pm on Tuesday, July 8th. Transportation will be provided from Pleasant Point. The workshop will be conducted by Vera Francis and Devon Kelley­-Yurdin.

Vera Francis is an educator­/activist dedicated to the heartland, Passamaquoddy Bay; a performance artist rooted in Wabanaki transformer storymaking. She holds a BA in English from the University of Maine, Machias, a M.Ed. in Literacy from the University of Maine, Orono. She is a favorite performer at the Eastport Arts Center, where her show will be featured on July 11.

Devon Kelley-­Yurdin is an illustrator, educator, and community arts activist living in Eastport, Maine. She received her BFA in Illustration and Communications Design from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. At Pratt, her focus within illustration was on alternative forms of storytelling and communication. She worked for three years as a director of a community-focused artists collective, the Rock Paper Scissors Collective in Oakland, CA and also partnered with the Shadow Puppet Workshop in Berkeley, CA

Although the workshop is free, registration is required. Children eight and nine must be accompanied by an adult. To register, call 853-­4650 or e­mail publicity@eastportartscenter.com.

There will be NO peanuts allowed at the EAC during this workshop. If parents are planning to bring snacks, please plan accordingly.
