Organizers say first twin villages Earthfest a success

Posted April 29, 2013, at 3:42 p.m.

The Towns of Damariscotta and Newcastle, with the help from many local organizations and businesses, completed the first-ever Earthfest week. Matt Lutkus, Damariscotta Town Manager, called Earthfest 2013, “One more partnership success story” for the Twin Villages.

Many collaborative activities took place throughout the week, including 60-70 people picking up litter on more than half of the roads in Damariscotta. The Rotary Club cleaned up the River Road in Newcastle, and several clubs and organizations cleaned up their respective neighborhoods in and around town.  The River Park was cleaned up by DRA volunteers, and F&S Property Maintenance donated the time and materials for the mulching and new plantings at the new “Welcome to the Twin Villages” sign in Newcastle.

Earthfest concluded with a celebration BBQ at the Damariscotta town office, with approximately 100 people stopping by to enjoy the delicious chicken BBQ donated by Rising Tide, and cooked by Lion’s Club volunteers.  King Eider’s Pub donated the dessert, and Renys donated beverages and paper goods.

And since every day really is Earth Day, the fun will continue into May. Mark your calendars for the electronic waste collection day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 18, at the Floor Magic location on Biscay Road, Damariscotta.

E-waste includes TVs, monitors, copiers, cameras, CD players, DVD players, etc. This event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Damariscotta and Newcastle, and they will gratefully accept donations at the collection, to support local community programs.
