One Billion Rising on V-Day, February 14

Join us February 14, 2013 6 pm for V-DAY IN BELFAST, a 15 minute gathering in the streets of Belfast in coordination with people worldwide, calling for the end of violence against women. Meet at the corner of Main and High Street for 15 minutes of picture taking, video streaming, dancing, speaking, followed by a SPEAK OUT and celebration of our commitment to end violence against women, at the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library. Bring songs, stories, poems to share.

This day of action is part of “One Billion Rising”, a global event called for by Eve Ensler, activist and author of The Vagina Monologues –One Billion women and the people who love them, dancing in the streets to re-spark a real movement to end violence against women. Why 1 billion? There are 3 billion women in the world and the UN statistics show that 1 out of every 3 women will be raped or assaulted in her life time. We all know ‘her’.

To date there are groups in 142 countries planning actions, strikes, dances, throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and throughout the United States. Belfast will be online with a billion people around the world.

One Billion strong is more than a statement-it is a Movement. As Ensler writes,” The earth will move and attitudes will shift.”

Produced by ‘Women and Their Allies’ – to benefit – Family Planning of Maine and New Hope for Women, and us all.
