Noel Paul Stookey (“Paul” of Peter, Paul & Mary) will perform a benefit concert at the Eastport Arts Center on Saturday, August 23 at 7pm. This concert is part of the first ever state-wide tour Stookey has put together in his forty years as a Maine resident. The inspiration for the tour came when The Grand in Ellsworth invited Stookey to perform a benefit concert, and he decided to expand it to include multiple towns and venues. Many of the shows on this tour are benefits for the host theater, including the one at the Eastport Arts Center. Funds raised at this concert will go to support the EAC’s ongoing year-round programming. Says Stookey, “it just seemed natural to salute the good works of Maine communities by combining the concert with an opportunity to raise awareness and support for a local cause.”
Singer/songwriter Noel Paul Stookey has been altering both the musical and ethical landscape of this country and the world for decades—both as a member of the legendary Peter, Paul and Mary and as an independent musician who passionately believes in bringing the spiritual into the practice of daily life. In addition to his recordings with the trio, he has released a number of solo works, several albums with the ensemble Bodyworks, and some anthologies. Funny, irreverently reverent, thoughtful, compassionate—passionate—Stookey’s vocal sound is known all across this land: from the “Wedding Song” to “In These Times.” He has recorded over 45 albums, both as part of the legendary trio and as a soloist. As an activist, he has used his music to promote a dialogue of acceptance and inclusion. The royalties from his classic “Wedding Song”, which he wrote in 1968, go to the Public Domain Foundation, and nearly $2 million has been put to work for various charities.
Admission to the benefit concert is $20 in advance, $25 at the door, and $10 for those under 18. To reserve your tickets, call 207-853-4650. The Eastport Arts Center is located at 36 Washington St. in Eastport.
