MACHIAS, Maine — A new program is being initiated in the Machias area that will provide morning telephone calls to house bound senior citizens. The calls are intended to check the well being of the seniors and make sure they are safe and sound.

Volunteers are needed to make a call or two each morning and an organizational meeting is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the Machias Bay Chamber of Commerce office, 11 Main Street.

The Chamber is sponsoring the program, which is being organized by Meghan Galligan. Galligan learned of similar programs in other parts of the state and was moved to initiate one here. Anyone interested in participating may call the Chamber at 255-4402 for more information or attend the meeting. Seniors that would like to receive a daily phone call may also sign up by calling the Chamber.
