MACHIAS, Maine — The winter location of the new Machias skating rink will be in the parking lot of the Southside ball field, next to M&M Plaza.
New gravel will be put down to make a level base, which also will improve the parking lot. Stephen “Smitty” Smith has offered the use of his property in front of the ball field for parking. It will be plowed in the event of snow.
Once there is a sustained period of cold, the rink will be filled, frozen and maintained until warmer weather returns.
The Machias Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the rink and extends its gratitude to everyone that has made this project possible, including the Machias Savings Bank, the town of Machias, Hanscom’s Construction, inmates from Down East Correctional Facility, EBS, and two dozen benefactors that donated the money to build wooden benches.
If anyone needs skates or has skates to donate, there is a dropoff box at the Chamber office, 11 Main St., Machias.
