On behalf of the Acadia Family Center Board of Trustees, Sam Hamill, Chair, has announced the appointment of Dr. Daniel C. Johnson as the new Executive Director of the nonprofit organization that offers education, prevention, and treatment to people struggling with alcoholism, substance abuse, chemical dependency, and related mental health disorders on Mount Desert Island, throughout Hancock and Washington Counties and the outer islands.
“Dan is an exceptional individual who is ideally qualified for and suited to this job,” said Mr. Hamill. “He is a native of Maine, has lived on Mount Desert Island for 32 years, where helped start some of the first counseling programs at MDI elementary schools in Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, and Tremont to provide developmental, individual, and group counseling and to teach students how to resist peer pressure to use drugs and alcohol.
“He is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and Certified Clinical Supervisor, with a Master’s Degree in Education and a PhD in Counseling that focused on Trauma Therapy. Dan has worked at Acadia Hospital for the last 21 years, where he has served as clinical supervisor, and provided individual and group counseling for people struggling with substance abuse and other mental health issues. He is also an assistant professor at the University of Maine, where he teaches graduate level counseling students.
“Given this background, it is not surprising that Dan believes the educational programs offered by the Acadia Family Center are vital to the community.”
“I am very excited at the prospect of working at the Acadia Family Center to strengthen and expand its programs, here on MDI, on the outer islands, and throughout Hancock and Washington Counties, where so many of our neighbors struggle with alcohol and drug abuse and addiction. The Acadia Family Center has a thirty-five year history of offering resources for recovery to the people in our community. It is not a simple task; we all know how difficult it can be to face our own challenges, overcome them, and move forward. But at Acadia Family Center we believe firmly in the power of human beings to change, given the right tools, encouragement, and guidance. It’s exciting to be a part of that effort – and to help to make a real difference in the lives of the people of our community.”
