New executive director appointed at Huntsman

ST. ANDREWS, New Brunswick — The Huntsman Marine Science Centre, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of marine sciences, has appointed a new executive director, who will take the helm of the organization in March.

James A. Smith brings more than 30 years of experience with local, regional and international science, business, academic, non-profit, non-governmental organizations and government work related to socio-economic, environmental and natural resource development. He has broad experience with volunteer and non-volunteer boards, and extensive knowledge of governance, financial and administrative processes.

A Lieutenant Governor’s Medal recipient, Smith received his Bachelor of Science with honors in biology from the University of New Brunswick, and obtained a Ph.D in Aquaculture-Environment Management the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, Scotland.

Smith is a founding member of the Crabbe Mountain Freestyle Ski Club, and has served on various boards including the Nature Trust of New Brunswick, Fredericton YMCA and the Fredericton Amateur speed skating club.

He takes over from W.D. (Bill) Robertson, who was in the position for more than eight years.
