Need an international delivery? Here’s how to get a better price and a better service

Posted Nov. 22, 2012, at 9:23 a.m.

Your choices for sending parcels overseas have changed, and broadened, in just a few short years. In the not too distant past your options would most likely have been limited to using the local post office or one of the few established global carriers, such as DHL or UPS. These days, a quick search online will present you with page after page of international delivery companies; each promising unbeatable prices and the most reliable service such as ParcelHero; a simple to use international courier delivery company.

Since there is so much competition in the market at the moment, most couriers are constantly monitoring their prices to ensure that they really are offering the best deal currently available which means that, in effect, there should be very little to choose between in terms of price. A courier that charges twice as much as each of its competitors isn’t going to stay in business for very long unless it has something else to offer. The same is true of standards of customer care, if a courier builds a reputation for unreliable service it can be very hard to overcome.

There are a couple of areas where you can get a better than average service without paying a premium, though.

Let’s look at price first; we all like to save money where we can after all. As already mentioned, most online delivery services do make an effort to keep their quoted prices low in order to remain competitive. At the same time though, some couriers also offer additional discounts to people who opt to open a registered account with them. These discounts often take the form of loyalty points where the more you send, the more you save or will be presented through periodic offers for cut-price deals to selected parts of the world. If you have found a courier you like and trust that offers this type of membership scheme then why not take full advantage?

Getting a better service is not quite so straight-forward, however. Perhaps the best course of action here is to look out for a worldwide parcel delivery service that pro-actively monitors each and every shipment. This may sound a lot like jargon but what it effectively means is that your courier tracks your package for you at each stage from collection to delivery, identifying and solving any problems should they arise. Using a pro-active courier should mean that you never need to worry about whether your parcel arrives as intended – the courier will do all the worrying for you.

There really are some great deals and exceptional services available if you’re willing to spend a few minutes hunting them down. It might be easier to settle for the first courier you find but it could pay dividends to find a courier that delivers that little bit extra.
