NATIONAL TRAIN DAY TO BE CELEBRATED IN MAINE SATURDAY, MAY 12

Maine’s passion for trains – yesterday and today – and the different ways trains touch people’s lives will be on display Saturday, May 12 in celebration of the fifth annual National Train Day (www.nationaltrainday.com). The event will be held at the Airport Mall on Union Street in Bangor and in Brunswick at the Maine Street Station at 16 Station Avenue between 10:00am and 2:00pm.

Created by Amtrak, the national passenger railroad system, and recognized in dozens of cities across the U.S., the event is free and features a number of displays recognizing railroading in Maine. Among them:

- Downeast Scenic Railroad based in Ellsworth will feature a representative and a model train layout.

- Representing the Eastern Maine Model Railroad Club, Bill Soule’s HO train set features vintage rail cars.

- Maine Operation Lifesaver, a railroad safety group, will operate a model railroad display, play rail safety videos, and give away safety-related coloring books, pencils, bookmarks, Maine railroad trading cards, and stickers.

- Information about other Maine rail lines including Amtrak’s Downeaster, the Seashore Trolley Museum, the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway, and Boothbay Railway Village will be available.
