NATIONAL TRAIN DAY SATURDAY IN BRUNSWICK,
BANGOR, AND PORTLAND
National Train Day (nationaltrainday.com), a celebration of trains, big and small, will be recognized at three locations in Maine on Saturday, May 11. Activities will be held in Brunswick, Bangor, and Portland.
Activities in Brunswick include three model railroad layouts and the appearance and tours of one big train: Amtrak’s Downeaster at 12:30 including complimentary samples from the café car. Among others with displays will include the Maine Eastern Railroad, Maine Rail Group, Trainriders Northeast, the Seashore Trolley Museum, and a Maine Operation Lifesaver railroad safety exhibit. The Brunswick fun at the Amtrak station on Station Avenue begins at 11:00am and continues until 4:00pm.
In Bangor, the celebration at the Airport Mall runs from 10:00am until 2:00pm with at least two operating train layouts along with displays featuring the Downeast Scenic Railroad and the Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad, both which operate tourist trains throughout the summer and fall. Operation Lifesaver will also promote railroad safety.
The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad at 58 Fore Street in Portland will host National Train Day between 10:00am and 4:00pm. Demonstrations on hand and whistle signals, coupling trains, and throwing switches will highlight activities. The railroad will also offer rides on the Fairmont and Pump cars, and there’s a stop at the engine house to get a glimpse at restoration of a steam locomotive.
Activities at Brunswick and Bangor locations are free and there will be giveaways including coloring books, bookmarks, stickers, and more.
