Limestone, ME, October 18, 2013 – The Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM) Foundation has received a $5,000 donation from Katahdin Trust Company to equip the school’s student engineering lab.

The new MSSM classroom, dubbed the makerspace, is a 6,000 square foot workshop and laboratory where students innovate, generate ideas, learn through hands-on building, observe their ideas in action, and optimize their designs.

The room will be an extension of the engineering, physics, and robotics classrooms and will be available to any student who wants to see their ideas come to life.

“The MSSM Foundation is tremendously grateful to Katahdin Trust Company for its generous support of MSSM students. This gift will jump-start the makerspace and help students start designing and constructing their own projects this fall,” said MSSM Foundation President Kate Reilly deLutio.

The grant from Katahdin Trust Company will fund the purchase of tools and materials for the new classroom workspace.

“The mission of MSSM is to provide unique educational opportunities for gifted science and math students at the high school level is important to the future of our state and region,” said Vicki Smith, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Katahdin Trust Company. “Our donation will provide a significant portion of the start-up funds for the makerspace lab, the results of which will be realized through students building their careers in engineering, robotics and physical science.”

Rena Bouchard, Vice President and Manager of the Limestone and Van Buren branches of Katahdin Trust Company and Craig Staples, Vice President and Commercial Services Officer at Katahdin Trust Company presented a donation check to MSSM during the school’s October 18 -19 parent conference weekend.

MSSM seeks a total of $50,000 for the makerspace and is actively looking for additional sponsors.
