Mobile Maturity levels and Wubiquo

Posted Dec. 22, 2012, at 5:22 a.m.

Businesses of all sizes now realize the need for a strong mobile presence. According to Google mobile searches will outpace desktop searches. This presents a daunting challenge to businesses that do not have in-house expertise to cater to mobile audiences. The journey to reach the pinnacle of mobile maturity can be multi-staged as described below.

1. Mobile Friendly: Updating your current web site to ensure compatibility on mobile browsers by removing non supported elements such as Flash, Applets or ActiveX objects.

Cons: This may be a good start but not enough to have a satisfactory user experience on mobile devices

2. Mobile Optimized: Optimizing rich media (images, videos, etc..) elements, updating form and content layouts for mobile screens such as eliminating the need for horizontal scrolls

Cons: Involves a lot of re-design and re-work that would be non-starter

3. Responsive/ Contextual Design: Co-existence of support for multiple layouts (desktop, mobile, tablet) by creating multiple style sheets based on screen or device characteristics

Cons: Makes code maintainability a challenge

A typical way of implementing any of the three stages described above is through the use of a development tool that probably was used to create the original website.

Another strategy to tackle this challenge is think “mobile first” that translates into developing a Native Application aka an App or re-designing the current website using technologies like HTML5/CSS3 to support mobile devices. However, creating a native app per Device/OS platform is not sustainable for most businesses. Tools such as Phone Gap/Titanium can address some of the needs of an app developer.

On the other hand, HTML5 as a standard cannot solve the needs of mobile users that arise from constraints of devices with different screens & form factors. There are several Do it Yourself(DIY) tools available on the web providing a template based format for creating mobile web pages and while they look attractive but are mostly suitable for very small websites.
