Veteran journalist brings experience in nonprofit, educational, progressive groups to a campus with an emerging profile in Maine
BAR HARBOR, MAINE — Bob Mentzinger has been hired as Public Relations Manager for College of the Atlantic.
In his new role, Mentzinger is responsible for managing and promoting the college’s identity and reputation before a variety of audiences including students, prospective students, alumni, donors, the Greater Mount Desert Island community and local, national and international media.
Mentzinger spent 10 years managing Maine newsrooms and was named the state’s top editorial writer by the Maine Press Association in 2012-13. He’s also served a number of progressive political causes, including media for a Ralph Nader-led environmental group in Washington, D.C., and as adviser for a Democratic candidate’s winning statewide campaign for nomination to the U.S. Senate in 2012.
Mentzinger also has tutored in inner-city Washington schools and was elected to serve on his local school board in 2012. He holds a master of arts in writing from Johns Hopkins University and a B.A. in journalism and political science from The George Washington University.
“This college has so many stories the world needs to hear,” said President Darron Collins ’92. “Bob is a tremendous asset and strategic thinker who will help the world come to know our mission and our excellence. We are grateful he chose COA as the next step in his career.”
“College of the Atlantic is a gem of higher education in Maine and at the head of the pack for innovative collegiate learning nationally,” Mentzinger said. “It’s a dynamic resource that I’m eager to help continue to grow.”
College of the Atlantic was founded in 1969 on the premise that education should go beyond understanding the world as it is, to enabling students to actively shape its future. A leader in experiential education and environmental stewardship, COA has pioneered a distinctive interdisciplinary approach to learning that develops the kinds of creative thinkers and doers needed by all sectors of society in addressing the compelling and growing needs of our world.
