ROCKPORT, Maine — Farley & Son, Inc. is pleased to announce that effective March 11, Thatcher E. Silar will be joining its team of skilled and dedicated professionals. 

Thatcher comes to Farley and Son after nearly 20 years in the earthwork and general contracting business.  Most recently he was employed as the chief estimator and project manager at another respected earthwork company. 

Thatcher attended Louisiana State University and majored in construction management and then went on to hone his craft working summers for a large general contractor in Pennsylvania.  In addition to these previous endeavors, he has worked in the field in various capacities as a superintendent, layout engineer, foreman, and equipment operator. 

Some of his more recent projects include managing the earthwork contracts for a school expansion on Islesboro, Colby Museum of Art, Bartlett Woods retirement community, Streetscape construction in Rockland, the widening of Route 90, and scores of smaller projects. 

Thatcher holds certifications in Erosion Control, Red Cross first aid training, MMTA supervisory training, drug and alcohol detection, OSHA 10 training, and as a Certified Septic System Installer.

 ”I grew up in a family full of engineers and construction professionals,” said Silar. “My father is a Professional Engineer and owned a large general construction company.  From the time I was 12, I used to spend my summers working for his business beginning as a laborer. To this day I’m intrigued by the process of starting a project on paper and then transforming it into the real world to craft something of value. The feeling of accomplishment, pride and ownership that comes from being able to look at something you have created never gets tiring. Also, too see the look on a client’s face when you help to bring their vision to life is priceless.” 

Silar said, “Aside from my passion for earthwork I enjoy the carpentry trade.  I spend a lot of my free time working on such projects. Recently I just completed a three-year project that involved moving a house that I own to another part of the property, putting it on a new foundation and retrofitting the entire interior. I did all of the work myself and it was very enjoyable.”
