Tom Keller, Ph.D., and Jerry Pieh, Ph.D., champions of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education across Maine, will lead an MDI Science Café titled, “”Who needs STEM? And How do I use this iPhone Anyway?” at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7 at McKays Public House in Bar Harbor.

“We carry more computing power in our pockets these days than the whole Apollo moon project had,” Keller points out, “and scientific discoveries are being made at a rapid pace. None of this would be possible without knowledge of mathematics. The big question is, how do we as residents of Maine make sure Maine is not left behind in rapidly advancing fields of science, technology, engineering and math?”

Keller and Pieh will involve everyone at the café in discussions about everyday STEM activities and the necessity of understanding technology. Keller is executive director of the Maine STEM Council and co-director of the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance and the Reach Center. Pieh is chair of the Maine STEM Council and of the board of trustees of the Maine School of Science and Mathematics.

The MDI Science Cafés are a program of the MDI Biological Laboratory. The cafés offer the public an opportunity to learn more about the science that affects everyone’s lives in a relaxed, informal forum. Scientists talk in plain English and welcome questions and discussion.

Each café lasts about an hour and is free of charge. Refreshments are available. For more information, visit www.mdibl.org or contact Bonnie Gilfillan at 288-3147. Winter and spring science cafés are sponsored in part by Bar Harbor Bank and Trust.
