Malaby recognized for foster, adoptive and kinship families advocacy

AUGUSTA, Maine – State Representative Richard Malaby of Hancock has been awarded the Outstanding Legislative Advocate of the year award by Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine. This annual award spotlights legislative leaders who take an active role in issues before the Legislature. Representative Malaby, whose district covers Hancock, Gouldsboro, Lamoine, Sorrento, Sullivan, Waltham, Winter Harbor and Fletcher’s Landing Township is a second term republican legislator, and returning member the Health and Human Services Committee. Representative Malaby was presented this recognition during AFFM”s annual conference that was held at Point Lookout this year. This conference features education and workshops for foster, adoptive and kinship parents from all across the state and New England.

Representative Malaby became a strong advocate for kinship families as he was touring his district during his campaign. “I am honored to have been recognized by AFFM as the outstanding child welfare legislative advocate of the year. I continue to advocate on behalf of children, with legislation I have put forth, regarding prescribing practices for antipsychotics (LD 338) and ADHD drugs (LD 716) for our most at risk children”

Past Legislative Advocates include Senator Michael Thibodeau, Representative Roberta Beavers, Representative Sally Lewin and Senator Richard Rosen. There are over 1500 licensed foster parents and over 3500 adoptive parents in Maine. The amount of kinship families are estimated to be close to 10,000.
