Camden, Maine, March 5, 2014– The ABS Center for Engineering, Science and Research at Maine Maritime Academy received a sizeable donation from longtime supporter Camden National Bank as part of an effort to raise funds to build a state-of-the-art science facility at the Castine campus.
“Maine Maritime is a world-class institution providing graduates with the skills and education to succeed in a wide array of fields around the globe. When we think of the benefit to our customers of the investments we make in online and mobile technology we often use Maine Maritime graduates as an example. These are professionals who will ship out around the world and we want them to retain their ties to Maine. Camden National is very proud to be a part of this project and continues to value our partnership with the academy,” said Greg Dufour, President and CEO of Camden National Bank.
Camden National Bank and its affiliate Acadia Trust N.A. have a strong relationship with the academy and partner with them on a number of initiatives. Last fall, Camden National and Maine Maritime Academy launched a financial literacy series which is designed to help students learn the ins and outs of managing their finances. They will be offering another class in the spring that is geared to the graduating seniors. In addition to helping prepare students for their financial future Camden National will be opening a new space in their Castine branch called The Camden Landing — a wi-fi enabled location for both the students and residents of Castine to conduct meetings, or simply have a quiet place to go.
“Camden National Bank has been very generous to the academy over the years, and we are thrilled to have their support of this project,” said Dr. William J. Brennan, President of Maine Maritime Academy. “The bank has been tremendously responsive to the needs of our students, and this is another example of their commitment to the campus and our community.” The gift will help to leverage additional funding from an anonymous foundation that has pledged to match gifts to the ABS Center.
Construction of the 3-story, 30,000-square-foot building is scheduled to be complete in January of 2015 and will incorporate sustainable features, including a storm water collection system, and locally produced materials, such as Maine brick and granite. The ABS Center will be home to renewable and ocean energy laboratories, an innovation center, and testing and materials labs.
