On Thursday, November 15, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, which has raised and contributed more than $4.3 million to help end hunger in Maine since 1990 including a record-setting $447,000 in 2011, in partnership with Good Shepherd Food-Bank, celebrated the seventh anniversary of Maine’s first “Food Mobile,” first visit to Bangor by distributing some of those funds to help feed Maine’s hungry for Thanksgiving. Since its inception in 2005, the Food Mobile program has distributed nearly 2.7 million lbs of food throughout the state.
In addition to celebrating the Food Mobile, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger provided funds to help food pantries throughout Maine purchase nearly 7,000 Thanksgiving meals for families in need. The funds were presented at Good Shepherd Food Bank’s Distribution Center in Brewer.
“Maine’s credit unions are proud to be a leader in ensuring that Maine’s hungry are not overlooked this holiday season, at a time when more families are facing difficult times financially. The Food Mobile continues to be an invaluable resource to Maine’s food pantries in this effort and throughout the year. As we begin the winter season, the truck is an increasingly important tool, as it is able to go to the more remote food pantries that may have trouble sending someone to pick up food,” explained Jon Paradise, Governmental & Public Affairs Manager for the Maine Credit Union League.
“Maine’s credit unions are a great partner not only with Good Shepherd Food Bank but with our hundreds of member agencies. This kind of contribution coming at this time of year exemplifies the spirit and commitment of Maine’s credit unions to help the thousands of Mainers who otherwise may go hungry this Thanksgiving,” remarked Clara McConnell of Good Shepherd Food Bank.
Since 1990 the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised over $4.3 million to help end hunger in Maine. 100% of all money raised stays in Maine and goes directly to the cause of ending hunger.
