WESTBROOK, Maine – After a search that drew applicants from 18-to-25-year-olds from throughout the state and nearly 2,000 votes in online voting, one has emerged victorious in her pursuit of the ultimate prize—a dream job as the Young & Free Maine spokesperson. Lauren Reeves, a 21-year-old from Windham, is the winner of the third Young & Free Maine spokesperson job search! Lauren discovered she had won the position at an announcement party at the League’s offices on Friday, June 21st, where she was surprised by her friends and family, in addition to representatives from Maine credit unions. The program’s second Spokester, Kylie Keene, will complete her one-year term at the end of June.
Reeves was awarded the position after receiving the most votes during the competition’s voting phase, as well as for her suitability for the job. A recent graduate of the University of Maine, the skills she acquired as part her journalism degree were evident in her blogs and videos, where she demonstrated her adventurous spirit, and ability to connect with her peers. With half a year studying abroad in Spain already under her belt, this new adventure will send her, and the Young & Free Maine vehicle, a Chevy Cruze, throughout Maine, exploring all the state and its credit unions have to offer her generation.
“We were extremely impressed by the quality of the content our finalists created, as well as the effort they put into campaigning for this coveted position,” John Murphy, President/CEO of your League, said. “Through the combination of her videos, blog entries, and her skilled performance in media interviews, Lauren was a stand-out applicant, and proved that she has the writing skills, on-air presence and ability to communicate with Maine’s 25 and under crowd that make her an obvious choice for this exciting opportunity.”
After initially being speechless upon learning she had been selected, Reeves called the opportunity to “speak with and on behalf of Maine’s 18-25 year-olds a dream come true. I have never wanted something so badly in my entire life; this is great.”
As the spokesperson for Young & Free Maine, Lauren will work on behalf of Maine’s credit unions in a year-long contract with salary. She will serve as a reporter and advocate for her age group, attending events and creating daily online content including blog articles and videos to keep YoungFreeMaine.com an information hub for the 25-and-under crowd in Maine. She has also been outfitted with tools of the trade, including a digital video camera, smart phone with a paid contract for the year, and a Mac Book Pro laptop, which she will be able to keep at the end of her term. She was also handed the keys to the Young & Free Maine Chevy Cruze, which she will have use of during her term.
Lauren won the position after an intense competition with her fellow finalists, Joshua Hesseltine, a 23-year-old from Greenbush, Kirsten Russell, a 22-year-old from Cumberland, and Taylor Ussery, a 22-year-old from Houlton. The three runners up each received Gift Cards for their hard work.
Reeves began her position on July 1. Follow her all year-long at youngfreemaine.com, a site that attracts thousands of visitors each week, on Facebook and on Twitter.
