Maine Center for Creativity launches “network of networks” to connect creative and business resources across Maine
PORTLAND (Jan. 14, 2014) – Maine is home to many innovative organizations and people working in the arts, technology, business, and social services sectors — however, the state’s geography doesn’t make it easy to collaborate, or even locate each other.
On Tuesday, the Maine Center for Creativity unveiled its newest project to address this challenge: The Maine Network of Innovation and Creativity (“MaineNIAC”), a “network of networks” to bring people and organizations together both in person and online to tackle local and state challenges.
The project received a $20,000 boost from Bank of America, one of 14 organizations collaborating to help launch the in-person and digital network, and build its online collaboration and project support tools.
“We believe the Network provides an innovative resource to Maine’s business community,” said Bill Williamson, state president of Bank of America in Maine.
“It significantly increases the opportunity for statewide collaboration among Maine companies, entrepreneurs, and non-profit organizations. Notably, it also provides a platform for these same organizations and individuals to showcase and promote their capabilities to national and global markets.”
This $20,000 is part of a larger campaign that Maine Center for Creativity recently launched with a goal to raise $170,000 over the next 12 months to fully launch The Maine Network of Innovation and Creativity.
The Network recently held three regional work sessions across the state to identify potential projects and ideas for collaboration. At the core of this process is the “RFC” or Request for Collaboration, a short-form, open invitation from companies, entrepreneurs and nonprofits seeking collaborative partners with relevant expertise to work toward a specific goal.
The online component of the Network is designed to provide members the opportunity to share their ideas, RFCs, projects and successes with local, regional and global audiences.
“Our goal is to improve the flow of ideas and connect those who can bring those ideas to fruition. The Maine Network of Innovation and Creativity is designed to match talent, resources and investments of both capital and talent,” said Jean Maginnis, the executive director of the Maine Center for Creativity.
“Maine has the opportunity to be a premier destination for creative thinkers and doers to live and work. We expect this new network to connect companies and talent for problem solving, sharing of best practices and new ideation to help Maine companies grow while attracting professional talent and entrepreneurs to the state.”
