Maine AllCare welcomes new board member

Maine AllCare, a non-profit, non-partisan organization that promotes quality, affordable health for all Maine people, welcomes its newest board member, James Perley, PhD.

Dr. Perley began his career at Wayne State University in Detroit, then at the College of Wooster for the next 31 years in the Biology Department, teaching biochemistry and related subjects. Since his retirement in 2003 as Dean of Arts and Sciences at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois Dr. Perley has been active in community programs that serve our needy residents and recent immigrants.

He is current chair of Project FEED, a food pantry in Portland, Maine. He also serves on the Board of the Unitarian Social Action Committee of Maine (MUUSAN), and is active in many of the projects supported by the Allen Avenue UU Church.

Prof. Perley is a strong supporter of universal health care and Maine AllCare’s mission of bringing affordable, quality health care to all Mainers. Asked to summarize his perspective on health care, where we are and where we should be heading, he said:

“I am convinced that the money now diverted to insurers, if spent for actual medical care, would provide all of us better medicine at lower costs.  Having experienced  first hand what the insurance industry has done to senior’s prescription costs, and having had to recalculate each year which company has the best plans because of constantly changing and irrational rate increases, I am convinced that a single payer system would help control the bureaucracy that controls my access to my prescriptions now.”

We thank Dr. Perley for his willingness to serve in a leadership role as member of Maine AllCare.
