Main Street Skowhegan announces new executive director

SKOWHEGAN, Maine – Main Street Skowhegan is pleased to welcome Dugan Murphy, MS as the new executive director of its non-profit organization focused on downtown revitalization.

 Murphy, a Scarborough native, will begin work in Skowhegan in mid-March. He holds a bachelor’s degree in urban planning and a master’s in community planning from the University of Cincinnati.

 “Mr. Murphy brings a set of skills and experience that will prove beneficial to our downtown revitalization project,” said Lisa Caswell of the Main Street Skowhegan Board of Directors. “Especially in the area of preserving our historic downtown while ensuring its economic viability.”

Murphy holds certificates in historic preservation and geographic information science and has interned with Maine Preservation. The former small business owner most recently worked as a property survey coordinator with Avesta Housing in Portland.

Main Street Skowhegan, (MSS) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization focused on revitalizing downtown Skowhegan. It is made up of volunteers from the greater Skowhegan area wanting to make their downtown a better place. The organization is run by one full-time employee, a nine-member board of directors, and many community volunteers working on various committees and projects. 

More than 120 individuals, 16 service organizations and 80 businesses and non-profits who have donated more than 20,000 hours since 2005 supporting the efforts to revitalize Skowhegan’s downtown.

 In the 1980s, the National Main Street Center of the National Historic Preservation developed one of the most successful approaches to revitalizing downtowns in both urban and rural areas. MSS is using this Four Point Approach to encourage economic development within the context of historic preservation that is appropriate for today’s market place.
