Machias readies for massive celebration

MACHIAS, Maine — After more than a year of preparation by dozens of volunteers, Machias is ready to celebrate its 250th birthday with a week of events and activities. Kick off is June 14 when doznes of children will be painting Main Street windows with scenes of the Machias area.

“Every single event is free,” Chairman Sharon Mack said Tuesday. “We wanted to make sure that every family in the area could participate and enjoy all the events. From mustache and cooking contests, to the giant two-hour long parade to a massive fireworks display, there is truly something for everyone.”

Friday, June 14, 3 p.m. Window painting contest for all ages in the downtown area. Pre-registration required, 416-4888.

Saturday, June 15:

6 a.m. on, Paint Machias Day, canvas sign up at 250th headquarters, 50 Main Street;

7-8:30 a.m., pancake breakfast at American Legion Post #9, Court Street;

9 a.m. HUGE parade with 13 bands, 31 walking and marching units, floats, US Rt. 1 (Route = Sylvan Park to Court Street to Free Street to Colonial Way to Route 1 to the dike);

10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Margaretta Day Festival, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., UMM campus, historic re-enactments, craft and food vendors, and more;

4:30-6:30 p.m. Mason and Eastern Star public supper, Center Street;

7 p.m. Wet Auction of artworks, Pellon Center, US Rt. 1.

Sunday, June 16: 1 p.m. Concert of Choirs, featuring the Washington County Children’s Choir, Centre Street Congregational Church.

Monday, June 17: 1-5 p.m. Bus tour of Washington County historical sites by the Machias Historical Society, $12, contact valdine@myfairpoint.net for reservations; 6 p.m. Softball game between Machias town employees and Machias taxpayers (all are welcome) Southside Field (next to McDonalds.)

Tuesday, June 18: 3-7 p.m. self-guided reading on Sunrise Trail by Downeast Coastal Conservancy; 3:30 p.m. guided story time and activites for children accompanied by adults, meet at Sunrise Trail Kiosk; 5-10 p.m. Night of Music, open air concert at Station 1898 (train depot on US Rt. 1) bands include Pink Capos, The Fremont Street Band, The Leftovers, Cold Creek, the University of Maine at Machias Ukelele Club. Fire Department will be selling food.

Wednesday, June 19: 3 p.m. Children’s Day, games, races, events at UMM Athletic Fields, including a touch tank, bubble pit, sack races, egg-in-a-spoon races, K-9 demo, prizes. Fire Department will be selling food.

Thursday, June 20: 6 p.m. Kay Parker Center, Hadley Lake Road, Mustache Contest; Cooking Contest, no pre-entry required, 5 categories including appetizer, entree, dessert, baked beans and home canning; as well as a tasting tent, featuring local food producers with artisanal cheeses, herbal items, balms, soaps, granola, jams, etc.

Friday, June 21: 5:30 p.m. Birthday Party in Bad Little Falls Park, bring supper and a blanket, birthday cake will be provided, strolling musicians and entertainment; at dusk, SPECTACULAR fireworks at Middle River/dike/Machias Bay.

The Machias 250th Birthday Celebration headquarters at 50 Main Street has T-shirts, totes and other items for sale as well as more detailed information about all events and historical displays.
