MACHIAS, Maine — Thanks to the creative mind of Supervisor Chris Sprague and the talents of inmates at the Down East Correctional Facility in Machiasport, geogadgeting has come to Washington County.

Geogadgets take geocaching, an enormously popular hobby, to another level by creating puzzles and brain teasers that require geo-searchers to solve the puzzle of the geogadget before they get their reward. Geo-searchers use the website geogadget.com to find the GPS coordinates to locate geocaching sites.

The Machias Bay Chamber geogadget is a replica of the Quoddy Lighthouse at Lubec and is named “Machias Bay Magic Lighthouse.”

Sprague and the Chamber are hoping that other businesses in the greater Machias area will want a geogadget at their location and he and his crew are willing to work on other creative designs. By placing the gadgets around the area, the Chamber hopes to draw even more visitors and tourists to Washington County.

Sprague can be reached at DECF at 255-4556 to arrange for a geogadget design and placement.
