Let’s Go! awarded mini-grants to three Midcoast organizations: Owls Head Central School (OHCS), Camden Hills Regional High School (CHRHS) and Kids Club, the Penobscot Bay YMCA’s afterschool program. The grants will help these organizations move healthy eating and active living strategies forward in their programs.
Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 is a simple message that encourages people to:
• eat 5 or more fruits and vegetables a day,
• watch 2 hours or less of recreational screen time,
• engage in 1 hour or more of physical activity a day and
• consume 0 sugary beverages.
All three awardees chose projects that will help their students do fun things to increase physical activity.
The Camden Hills Regional High School wellness team will use their grant award to purchase hand weights and jump ropes for physical education and athletic classes, as well as for after-school fitness classes.
Owls Head Central School will build an interactive walking path in the school’s field. The path will consist of open ended boxes on posts where teachers and staff can place activity ideas and learning objectives into each box that can be used during class time.
Kid’s Club, the Penobscot Bay YMCA’s after school program, purchased snowshoes. Children who participate in Kids Club (kindergarten through fifth grade) will be able to choose snowshoeing (weather permitting) as one of the outdoor activities they can participate in on a daily basis.
Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 is a nationally recognized childhood obesity prevention program that focuses on increasing healthy eating and active living for children birth to 18 through policy and environmental change.
