LePage Administration seeks to certify more communities as Business Friendly

AUGUSTA, Maine – - Marking the first year since the launch of the successful Certified Business Friendly Community initiative (www.maine.gov/decd/cbfc), the LePage Administration announces two additional application deadlines for 2013.

Communities that willingly create opportunities for existing and new businesses have until May 3 to submit an application, with the year’s second deadline set for Sept. 6.

“While my administration recognizes that every Maine community strives to be business friendly, it is important to recognize those communities that share my goal of economic prosperity, job growth and an ‘open-for-business’ mentality across the state,” said Gov. Paul R. LePage in a press release Wednesday afternoon.

Since the program’s inception in March 2012, a total of 18 Maine communities have received the business friendly status. To be certified “business friendly,” multiple areas of criteria are considered, including customer service, business involvement and collaboration, input from the public, and consistency in licensing and permitting. Communities named business friendly will be presented with a certificate, two MaineDOT road signs and will become a key part of Maine’s business attraction strategy.

“The governor has worked tirelessly to promote business growth, and to streamline and eliminate red tape. This is an opportunity for communities to showcase their own achievements,” said Commissioner George Gervais of the Department of Economic and Community Development. “Simply taking the time to complete the application is a real eye-opener to communities, not only for what can be done, but for what they have accomplished.”

A team of public and private economic development experts reviews each application to determine eligibility in the program. Each community is evaluated on an individual basis.

Applications for the 2013 Certified Business Friendly Community initiative can be found at www.maine.gov/decd/cbfc or by emailing Andrea Smith at andrea.smith@maine.gov. Communities receiving certification will be notified and, at that time, will be invited to a ceremony honoring the latest recipients.

The 18 communities currently certified Business Friendly are Auburn, Augusta, Bath, Biddeford, Brewer, Bucksport, Cumberland, Ellsworth, Fairfield, Guilford, Kennebunk, Lewiston, Lincoln, Pittsfield, Saco, Sanford, Topsham and Westbrook.
