Kiwanis Christmas tree sales to benefit scholarships
Posted Dec. 02, 2013, at 12:55 p.m.
The Kiwanis Club of Rockland has kicked off its annual Christmas Tree sale with the delivery of the first batch of fresh-cut Maine trees. With a plan to sell more than five-hundred trees before Christmas Eve, the Maverick Street Plaza sales lot in Rockland will be staffed 7 days a week, from morning through the early hours of darkness. Several Kiwanis members and supporters worked over the Thanksgiving weekend to prepare for the seasonal sales event. Christmas Tree Committee co-chairs Everett Spear III of Rockland, [left], and Dan Saucier of Thomaston flank Kiwanis president Katie Tarbox of Spruce Head on the first day of sales.
Hours of operation will begin at 9 a.m. on weekends, and 11 a.m. on weekdays, with sales continuing under the lights each night for those who enjoy the special experience of selecting a Christmas tree after dark.
Trees will be priced according to size: 6-8 feet, $30; and 8-12 feet, $45. A limited number of smaller trees will be available.
Proceeds from the sale of Kiwanis Christmas trees are used to support the Kiwanis Scholarship Program for graduating high school seniors who reside in Knox County; and for funding of other special programs.
The club awarded more than $14,000 in scholarships in 2013, and an estimated quarter of a million dollars in scholarships have been distributed over the past 60 years.
According to Kiwanis President Katie Tarbox of Spruce Head, the annual Christmas tree sale is the heritage project for the Rockland community service organization. Tarbox added that the local group has been selling Christmas trees since the 1950s, and is one of the largest Kiwanis fundraising events of the year.
Winter meetings of the Kiwanis Club are held at noon every Monday at Archers On The Pier in Rockland.
