CAMDEN – On a Saturday afternoon, August 2nd siblings Hannah, Elle and Sam Nash (a.k.a. “the Kids at Waterside”) raised $326 for their local animal shelter, P.A.W.S. Animal Adoption Center in Rockport, by selling home-made cookies and crafts at their lemonade stand on Bayview Street. With the help of their mom, Toni, the siblings orchestrated the entire fundraiser – they posted fliers, baked dog-bone-shaped cookies, designed their own P.A.W.S. t-shirts and displayed photos of cats and dogs waiting to be adopted at the center.
“The Kids at Waterside” are not the only kids passionate about helping homeless animals. In May, the K-Kids Club of Camden-Rockport Elementary raised over $100 for P.A.W.S. from the sales of their hand-made dog biscuits. In June, the graduating 5th grade class of Captain Albert Stevens School in Belfast collected over $400 in donations on behalf of P.A.W.S. The center has also been part of multiple birthday celebrations when birthday boys and girls ask their friends to make donations to the dogs and cats instead of buying presents.
Community-led fundraisers like these are a significant source of support for the care of hundreds of cats and dogs that come to P.A.W.S. every year. The money raised by the Nashes could provide 65 rabies vaccines, 150 lbs of cat litter or feed a room of 15 cats for four months. Funds raised by projects led by the community – kids, adults and organizations – add up quickly. In 2013 the community raised nearly $30,000 to aid P.A.W.S.
P.A.W.S. thanks “the Kids at Waterside” and supporters of all ages who have fundraised on behalf of the animals for their creativity, generosity and compassion.
