BELFAST, Maine — This past weekend, friends and family of Diane Whitten gathered at the Diane Whitten Memorial Garden, located near the welcoming gates to at Belfast City Park. All brought either a shovel, edger, pitch fork or a favorite weeding tool, gardening gloves and water to drink and came ready to honor this area Mother Theresa with a beautiful garden.
In addition to dear friends of Diane, her dear husband, Dr. Dana Whitten, also helped both with his shovel and also with his sharing wonderful memories of his wife and all that she did for quietly, behind the scenes and sometimes even unbeknownst to her husband, who only learned about some of her good deeds in cards from the beneficiaries sent to him after her passing.
Whitten was a Registered Nurse and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in the Women and Infants Health Care Unit and at Waldo County Home Health and Hospice, before becoming Belfast’s Public Health Nurse. She also worked with her husband, Dr. Dana Whitten, local pediatrician, in his practice.
Whitten was the first female selectman in Northport, held a lobstering license, was an avid gardener and was a member of Northport Volunteer Fire Department. She passed away last June after a valiant struggle with cancer.
Those wishing to make donations for the garden can mail checks to: Diane Whitten Memorial Garden, c/o WIHCU, P.O. Box 287, Belfast, ME 04915.
