The Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine (JCA) requests that Governor Paul LePage retract statements made during his Saturday radio address where he compared the IRS to what he called “the new Gestapo.”

Comparing the IRS, an agency of a democratic American government, to the secret police force of Nazi Germany is deeply offensive to the millions of Jews and other minority groups who suffered at the hands of the Nazis. Maine is home to a number of Holocaust survivors and we hope that out of respect for these citizens, and for all Mainers, that Governor LePage will publicly acknowledge this insensitive and inappropriate comment.

The Jewish Community Alliance (JCA) is a nonprofit organization serving Southern Maine and combines programming and fundraising for the Jewish Community. Its mission is to build Jewish community locally, in Israel and throughout the world. The JCA develops, provides, and supports diverse programs, education and services. We work with other Jewish organizations and local congregations, and functions as the hub of Jewish programming in Southern Maine.
