The “Insight” Conference for Community & Church Engagement, started off with a bang. Friday evenings topic “Turning the Page on Social Justice” with speaker Dr. Ron Sider, was an inspiring talk about government and church/faith roles in social justice. This talk was followed by a panel discussion of community leaders who gave advice to those in the audience who are interested in working with the poor: listen to their needs and don’t make assumptions, become a mentor, partner with government social services, offer unique services and don’t duplicate what other organizations are doing. The “Insight” Conference continues Saturday Aug. 23 with a workshop “Turning the Page on Prison Reentry and After-Care Ministry” with speaker Rev. Fela Barrueto from 3:00-5:00, followed by a pot luck supper. The Christian Rock Band “The Founded Trio” will perform at 6:00 and the next presentation “Turning the Page on Human Trafficking” with guest speaker Karen Smith is at 6:45. Dr. Ron Sider will speak Sunday morning 10:15 at Columbia Street Baptist Church, 63 Columbia Street, Bangor. The “Insight” Conference is a presentation of The Columbia Street Baptist Church, and the Columbia Street Project.
