Informational session on mercury in Penobscot River, bay

Posted March 28, 2014, at 3:22 p.m.

STOCKTON SPRINGS, Maine — An informational meeting on “Mercury in the Penobscot River and Bay” will be held 3-5 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Stockton Springs Town Hall.

The mercury pollution of the Penobscot River and Bay has been in the news lately. The closures of fishing grounds for lobster and crab directly affects several fishermen in our area. Future testing and more closures may be necessary to ensure safe marine products and clean water for the fish native to the river and those that pass through.

After nearly 20 years of pollution it is time to clean up our river and bay. Come and find out the status of the law suit against the former Holtra Chem Corp. and possible mitigation for those problems.

The meeting will be hosted by Veronica Magnan and sponsored by Maine Peoples’ Alliance. For information, call 567-6097.
