HOPE Festival Dedicated to Arnie Neptune — Timbered Lake to Perform

For the past eighteen years Penobscot elder, Arnie Neptune, opened the HOPE Festival with a blessing for honoring our connections to the earth and to each other. This year the free festival, held on Saturday, April 27th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Student Recreation and fitness Center, will be dedicated to Neptune, who died last year. According to festival organizer, Ilze Petersons, Neptune’s spirit will continue to guide the festival, held each year near Earth Day. The festival features information from organizations working environmental and community sustainability along with music, a lively and informative children’s program provided by the Fields Pond Audubon Center, Maine Discovery Museum, and Windover Arts Center and the amazing juggling of Zachary Field. Delicious food will be for sale by local vendors.

Neptune’s spirit will be acknowledged throughout the day. The opening will feature a community blessing and the HOPE Festival singers, led by Marty Kelley, director of Voices for Peace. Later in the day, Timbered Lake, an acoustic duo featuring a synthesis of spoken word and song composed by singer-songwriter Crow Suncloud and singer-songwriter, Diana Ramsdell Newman, will perform songs about respect for the earth, stewardship values and individual and community healing.

These stewardship values promoted by Neptune are at the heart of this year’s festival with the theme of “Do One Thing (DOT)”. A unique grassroots keynote will feature twelve five-minute DOT presentations by members of the community. More than 60 organizations will also provide DOTs participants may choose to post on a Wall of HOPE and the day will close with a spirited “Connect the DOTs” Ceremony and the drumming and singing by the Alamoosic Lake Singers.

There is something to inform, inspire and entertain everyone.
