The annual exhibit of the island’s rug hooking group, Hook ‘n I, will hang at the Southwest Harbor Public Library during the month of May. Everyone is invited to the Artists’ Opening Reception on Friday, May 3, from 5-6:30pm at the Library.

The Hook ‘n I group was started by the late Patty Wharton, who was a self-taught artist. Members of the group have created original designs and have also worked from traditional and current hooking patterns. The group meets during the winter months at the Southwest Harbor Library.

Rug hooking has long been a tradition in Maine. Many years ago, rugs were hooked by local women both to produce articles for their homes and to sell for extra money. The Hook ‘n I members enjoy carrying on this tradition, creating beautiful rugs and mats.
