ELLSWORTH, Maine — Healthy Acadia and Friends in Action will sponsor free “Tai Chi for Health” classes 10-11 a.m. for eight weeks, April 30-June 18, at Ellsworth Senior Center, 125 State St.
While the classes are free, a $3 donation per class is suggested. The classes will offer participants an opportunity to learn how to improve their strength and balance, and reduce their fear and risk of falling.
“Friends in Action’s vision is that the Senior Center will promote good health among older adults by offering opportunities such as this Tai Chi class,” stated Jo Cooper, Executive Director of Friends in Action, in a press release. “We are grateful to Healthy Acadia for helping us to make it available here. There has been a tremendous response and ongoing interest in the class, with over 50 seniors being introduced to this great activity.”
Throughout the eight-week course, participants will be introduced to exercises that promote movement control through the integration of mind and body. “Tai Chi for Health” is an evidenced-based program that, when practiced regularly, helps increase flexibility, muscle strength and coordination, thus reducing the risk and fear of falling. In addition, practicing “Tai Chi for Health” increases confidence, further promoting health and wellbeing.
“We are excited to be working with Friends in Action to bring back this fun and rewarding program to the Ellsworth Senior Center,” stated Nina Zeldin with Healthy Acadia, who will be teaching the sixteen-week classes. “The slow, continuous movements are healthful, relaxing and easy to learn.”
