New Youth Theatre Group to Perform Pirates of Penzance, Jr. at Hampden Academy’s new theater

First musical to be performed in the 900-seatperforming arts center

Hampden, ME – A new theatre group in Hampden proudly announces its first musical to be presented in the Hampden Academy Performing Arts Center. Pirates of Penzance Jr , a Gilbert and Sullivan comic operetta, will be performed by the Hampden Area Players Youth Theatre, July 12 and 13. Showtimes are 7:00 pm each evening with a 2:00 matinee on Saturday July 13. Tickets are $5.00 and available at the door.

The idea to start a youth theatre came about this year when Hampden Academy opened the doors to its 900-seat performing arts center. A group of students and parents were eager to see the center come alive in the summer with a musical production. Parent Beth Soule recruited director Rob Kissinger, an English teacher at Hampden Academy and soon a cast of 16 middle and high school students signed on to play various roles including a rollicking band of pirates, the major general and his lovely daughters, and a group of keystone cops.

Pirates of Penzance is among the most popular of the comic operettas by the legendary Gilbert and Sullivan duo. Set in 1897, the story concerns a young pirate Frederic, played by Justin Hatch, who has completed his 21st year as a pirate apprentice to a band of tender-hearted pirates. Frederick meets Mabel (Tien Misler), the daughter of Major-General Stanley (Morgan Wiercinski) and the two fall instantly in love. The pirate king, (Keenan Soule) and his sidekick pirate nurse, Ruth (Mikayla Burridge) reveal a paradox regarding Frederic’s leap year birthdate rendering his release from his indentured state invalid. Bound by his sense of duty, Frederic’s only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully. The General and a group of loyal officers solve the dilemma and the couple is happily united.

Other cast members include Jack Burridge, Alexandra Buzzini, Rosie Frost, Josie Lawrence, Daija Misler, Megan Morin, Ruby Ramsey, Alex Ross, Reba Sands,  Braeden Soule, and Garrett Soule.  For more information on the performance, email rkissinger@sad22.us.
